The City of Cockburn has pioneered a free Disaster Aware smart phone app with funding received through the Office of Emergency Management's All West Australian’s Reducing Emergencies (AWARE) Program. Mayor Logan Howlett said the app helps educate residents about how to prepare for an emergency as well as warning them about current incidents. “Disaster Aware allows our residents to create their own emergency plans and to share them with family and friends,” Mayor Howlett said. “It can also send ‘push notifications’ about emergencies unfolding within Cockburn to keep people informed, safe and aware of what is happening. “This localised control means we can advise residents about emergency situations very quickly, however residents must still call 000 immediately if they require urgent Police, Fire or Ambulance attention. “The City thanks all of the various State agencies, volunteers and staff who have helped to create this valuable resource for our community.” The Office of Emergency Management is pleased AWARE funding is being used to enhance the capacity of communities, and hopes advancing technology will continue to improve disaster awareness throughout the State.
